Dan Pacquiao, Vice-President at Cleversoft Inc., discusses the Perks of Being a Developer.
Campus DevCon at Liceo U, the third Campus Devcon in Cagayan de Oro, was proven a success on a Wednesday afternoon of June 26, 2013 at the AVR 1 of Liceo de Cagayan University. It was an event aimed to empower IT students to take into action what they are currently learning at school not only for their own benefit but for the country.
The participants were given a warm welcome by Dr. Andrew Ponte, Dean of College of Information Technology followed by a short introduction to DevCon and it's goal to Sync, Support, and Succeed by DevCon Member and CDO Representative John Reuben Requiroso.
The Lightning Talks segment was started by Jorge Azurin, Country Manager at Freelancer.com, who talked about the different potentials and rewards of being a freelancer while still a student and further encouraging the participants to put into action what they have already learned in school. Cris John Tagupa, a Freelance Web Developer, shared about responsive web design and its significant role in developing webs.
Dan Albert Pacquiao, Vice-Resident at Cleversoft Inc., further advocates the prestige of graduates in the IT course by stating the perks of being a developer. Lead Engineer of Syntactics Inc., Djane Rey Mabilin, got the crowd's attention by introducing GameMaker: Studio, an extendable cross-platform game creation system. This was followed by Romar Mayer Micabalo, Senior Server Admin at Time Doctor and Staff.com, who listed and explained the pros of using Yii — a high performance PHP framework best for developing 2.0 applications.
Paul Gardson Lesondra, a Front-End Developer at Lumina-FX, taught the participants the basic techniques of slicing and dicing using Photoshop and provided a short presentation. The segment was concluded by Noreen Angelie Ras, Team Leader/Technical Writer at Innovuze Solutions Inc., on a basic introduction about Arduino and the abeyant capabilities of programming students in developing one.
The segment was followed by Birds of a Feather wherein groups of three were to debate on the pros and cons of Facebook, mostly tackling the subject of privacy. The group that supported the latter (cons) won with two students from Xavier University and one from LDCU. SBO President Jireh Cuarto ended the afternoon event with his closing remarks.
Campus DevCon is a partnership with schools/colleges and Developers Connect (DevCon) Philippines that converges Filipino students taking up Computer Science and IT related courses and aiding them with better information through talks and connections with other students to provide more opportunities and holistic camaraderie.
