127 iTam IT and CS interns to be exact joined in the FEU-TECH Campus DevCon — a gathering which aims to augment the academic learnings of students with up-to-date trends in the IT industry, last May 13 which was held at the 17th flr, Multi-Purpose Hall at the Far Eastern University – Institute of Technology.
In cooperation with Junior Philippine Computer Society (FEU-TECH Chapter) and Developers Connect Philippines, this annual event, which was initiated in 2013, has been made possible once again.
DevCon Vice-President for Marketing and FEU-TECH alumnus RJ Ramirez kicks off the program with a brief introduction about DevCon.
As for the first lightning talk, we have Ms. Kit Valmadrid, a community manager of Philippine Web Designers Organization (PWDO) and a Project Management Support Expert at Globe Telecom sharing about "Business of Design".
During Valmadrid's talk, she emphasized several HOW-TOs to make it to the business world of which include the following:
1. Build your team.
2. Set your goals. Know your end-goal.
3. Establish your identity. Let your brand be known by taking actions such as building your own website.
Furthermore, Ms. Kit also tackled short discussions on:
- Requirements Gathering (when dealing with clients/customers) – In here, she stressed out why it is never okay to just say yes to every transaction we do without thoroughly deliberating every aspect of what we are dealing with; that while customers are important to our business, there are always smarter steps we can take to get the deal done without making too many compromises on our part.
- Project Proposal
- Contract (making)
Mr. Joseph Kim Javier, a DevCon member, an alumnus of Technological University of the Philippines, and a Software Engineer at Yondu Inc., enriched the iTam interns with a presentation entitled "Gearing Up Towards Your Career", where he lightly touched basic requirements and must-knows in pursuing a career on Web Development.
Expert Python Specialist at CyScorpions, Inc. and PythonPH trustee Mr. Josef Monje brings iTam interns one step ahead with his topic entitled "Jumpstart your Career in Tech".
In the course of his talk, Mr. Monje shared a number of things one must have to work on to secure a career in the tech industry and they are as follows:
- Optimize your productivity.
- Maximize learning.
- Help yourself. Maximize resources available to you.
- Help others by building something (new and useful).
- Maximize network connections (online and offline).
"Sa pag-attend niyo ng workshops at conferences, makikita/makikilala niyo yung potential employers niyo," Mr. Monje expressed.
Director and Head of Research and Development department in Samsung Electronics Phil. Corp. Mr. Richard Guinto also graced the event to present a topic about Research and Development and technological visions of Samsung in 2020 with a title, "Inspire the world. Create the future".
His one major tip for IT/CS students to make it big and set oneself out from the rest of programmers in the Tech industry? Learn algorithms.
Indie Mobile Developer Mr. Devlin Duldulao of Mobile.NET User Group shared about XAMARIN — a mobile application builder and designer created by Microsoft.

Corporate Software Developer and Development Lead at Any Network Systems, Inc. Mark Deanil Vicente of Mobile.Net User Group presented the last lightning talk entitled "Introduction to Visual Studio with Xamarin and Creating Basic Cross-platform Mobile App in Just a few minutes".
As soon as the lightning talks ended, an informal debate on tech topics or as DevCon puts it, a "Birds of a Feather (BoF)", transpired where six iTam interns participated to lightly talk about which is better between Google and Microsoft. Having two better arguments than the other, Team Microsoft won and was awarded with DevCon shirts while Team Google on the other hand, also received consolation prizes.
