Another Ruby on Rails Code Camp was organized by DevCon PH in partnership with Yondu, Inc. Professionals from all over Metro Manila gathered at Venture Space, Mandaluyong last April 21, 2018. Despite the hot weather, the attendees were eager to learn about Rails and building top-quality applications with it.
Participants began arriving and registering for the event at 8am. Everyone was making sure that they had their development environment all set up for writing code.
Ms. Janice Concepcion, the event’s team lead, kicked-off the code camp by introducing DevCon Philippines to the participants.
You can learn more about DevCon here.
DevCon is a non-profit organization that aims to promote Filipino developers and the “IT Pinoy
Talent” with events such as the Ruby on Rails Code Camp.
The speaker for the code camp was Sir Bryan Bibat. He is the former President of DevCon PH and Philippines Ruby Users Group, and is a Senior Developer and Trainer.
He began by setting the expectations for the code camp and introducing Ruby on Rails as a framework for development. Sir Bryan also discussed the basic syntax of the Ruby programming language, and also how to use it with Rails.
Ruby on Rails is a server-side web application framework that provides a default structure
for web services, databases, and web pages.
Also during the event, Yondu Inc., the event’s sponsor, introduced Yondu, an IT Solutions Provider in the Philippines that specializes in digital innovation.
They introduced their services as an IT company and job opportunities available for different kinds of individuals in the IT industry.
After eating lunch and a few more examples from Sir Bryan, everyone was ready for a DevCon code camp classic – the mini hackathon! For this code camp, the participants were tasked to create a simple upvoting and downvoting function for a simple web application.
Amazing prizes await the winners!
Everyone became focused on building their application during the mini hackathon.
The winners of the mini hackathon won great prizes courtesy of DevCon and Yondu. Congratulations!
Yondu also gave away more prizes as a raffle. Once again, congratulations!
It was a long but productive day. Not everybody won prizes but everyone got to go home with new knowledge that they could use in the future. Congratulations and thank you to all participants and volunteers!
